Skarlet – Mortal Kombat DLC Mini-Review

Platforms: Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade
Release Date: June 21, 2011

I’ll be honest, I didn’t need DLC to keep me coming back to an already fantastic game. However, I was counting down the days for this fighter to be unleashed for download. Fortunately, I wasn’t disappointed.

Skarlet has actually been in the background of the newest Mortal Kombat game, locked up in Shao Kahn’s arena, but this is her first playable outing. For $5, you get the ability to play as or against her in all of the modes but the story mode and two additional retro costumes for Cyrax and Sektor.

Contrary to popular rumor, she was never a glitched red Kitana. False glitch aside, she now has her own unique moveset that adds to wide array of present fighters. Skarlet has a good amount of basic and advanced moves, a greater number than even Scorpion or Sub-Zero. I was able to punch out satisfying combos, as they tended to be quick but maybe lacking damage similar to a heavyweight like Kratos.

I know, I know, you just want to see her fatalities (I’ll list them below) and X-Ray. I did too and I am happy with the way they turned out. With the outcome of each, I wouldn’t be surprised if the team over at NetherRealm is into some twisted blood porn but that is neither here nor there. Let the blood fly as it only powers her up. Fitting for Mortal Kombat, right?

Skarlet’s X-Ray is both strategically and visually pleasing. It quickly attacks the air and ground, meaning you can easily string into it for a good amount of damage. The actual affect matches the other fighter’s X-Rays with some brutal usage of her hand and boot.

Polished fighting aside, there are some odd quirks with her release. She’s not in the Nekropolis to track your stats and she doesn’t have an alternate costume that I could find. I beat arcade mode with her and searched the Krypt and Nekropolis and found nothing. There is hope though, as a hacker found her alternate on the disc a while back. Small issues for sure, but I would have liked to see those happen.

The price might be the only thing holding you back, but if you’re a big fan of Mortal Kombat, it should be an easy decision. Skarlet makes me ready to embrace the slew of fighters (Kenshi, Rain, and one unannounced combatant) that will be added on to this already content-packed game. I never thought I’d be so excited to see a women covered in so much blood.

Fatality #1: Blood Bath

Fatality #2: Make it Rain

X-Ray: Blood Bank
