E3 News Recap: Day 1

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, Call of Duty: Declassified, Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, and PS1 Games All Headed to the Vita

While I didn’t feel the Vita got as much love during Sony’s press conference, a few titles were announced for the system. After a palpable sense of “Umm… okay,” Sony just showed a mere title of a Call of Duty game heading to Vita. It isn’t Black Ops II, but it sounds to be something in that style. It is set to hit later this year.

Assassin’s Creed III got plenty of love during the conference as well, with a totally new game in the series. Called Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, you play as a black, French, female assassin in America during the late 1700s. This game comes out the same day as Assassin’s Creed III (October 30th) and the games will unlock stuff in each.
People have been clamoring for Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale to come out on the Vita and Sony has made that wish true. All-Stars will have cross play between the versions but a release date wasn’t given (it will probably be the same day as the PS3 version). Big Daddy from Bioshock and Nathan Drake from Uncharted were also revealed for the game.
PS1 games will also head the Vita this summer via firmware update.

Quantic Dream’s Amazing Next Game is Beyond: Two Souls

Quantic Dream hasn’t been fiddling with their fingers for the last few years. Instead, they’ve been hard at work on Beyond: Two Souls. This game seems to be similar to Heavy Rain, and has absolutely stunning visuals and performances. Ellen Page will be the game’s main character, Jodie Holmes, and she is some sort of medium with the ability to interact with a spirit. A 2013 release is likely. Chalk this one up on your radar immediately.

God of War: Ascension is Hitting PS3 Systems on March 12, 2013

After showing an incredible stage demo, a release was carved into a stone tablet for God of War: Ascension. Well, not really, but March 12, 2013 will be the day, continuing the usual God of War tradition of releasing in March. Hell yes.

Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs Looks Wonderful

While it was running on a PC, Ubisfoft’s Watch Dogs is coming on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC sometime in 2013. A new IP from them is rare these days, but this one looks to be a mix of Grand Theft Auto, Hitman, and Syndicate. This one stole the show at Ubisoft’s hilarious press conference.

Far Cry 3 has a Striking Amount of Nudity, Insane People, Drugs, Co-op, and Violence

Besides the stage demo shown (which I’ll have a post about), co-op for up to four players was debuted at Sony’s conference. It looked pretty standard, but cool nonetheless. Look for it when it hits in September.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Adds DLC with Vita Compatibility

Sony keeps on updating LittleBigPlanet 2, as they should, with some interesting DLC. Said DLC will add a new story mode, costumes, stickers, and other standard stuff, but that Vita compatibility. The handheld will act as an “enhanced” controller, featuring tilt, touch, and other motions. This is an interesting concept, one we will for sure have to see more on.

Rayman Legends Exists and has Five Player Co-op on Wii U

Ubisoft’s press conference showed off more Rayman, something I’ll always be appreciative of. While other versions weren’t shown or even talked about, the Wii U SKU will support five player co-op, with the tablet holder having a different supporting role. It didn’t look the the other systems could handle this, so it seems to give a slight advantage to the Wii U. Sadly, nothing else was shown or talked about.

Dead Space 3 Confirmed With Co-op and Seemingly No Horror, Hits February 2013

In what is probably the worst kept secret of E3 this year, Dead Space 3 was finally officially unveiled (after being force-confirmed) and showed of its new Gears of War-like skin. A cover system, drop-in/drop-out co-op, and a big boss battle was shown, showing off the more action side this game (and genre) seems to be falling into. Action does demo better than horror, so I’ll try not to be too pessimistic. Only a mere 25 months after Dead Space 2, Dead Space 3‘s release date is February 2013.

Wii U Exclusive Shooter Zombii U

Since Ubisoft has an initiative for new hardware, the Wii U will house a new survival-horror first-person shooter that takes place within a zombie outbreak. Ubisoft says it will feature “a unique death mechanic that puts players in the body of a different survivor each time they die, allowing them to track and take down their old, infected characters, recover their equipment and see if they can stay alive just a little bit longer this time.” Sounds interesting and hopefully its exclusivity will result in it having neat Wii U features.

Crysis 3 Stage Demo is Fast and Hitting in February 2013

After an admittedly impressive, yet linear demo, Crysis 3’s release date was narrowed down to a February time frame. I think I can wait that long. I hope at least.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist Hitting PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in Spring 2013

Microsoft may have shown off Splinter Cell: Blacklist but it is hitting PS3 and PC as well as the Xbox 360. Spring 2013 was the time frame given for this “stealth” game. OH SICK BURN!

Gears of War: Judgment Coming to Xbox 360 in 2013

Continuing the GoW: Prequel trend set by God of War: Ascension, this Gears game will be a prequel and hit the Xbox 360 in some unspecified time in 2013. It looks to be more of a good game in a solid franchise.

Microsoft’s SmartGlass is Coming to Xbox 360 this Fall

Microsoft wants to be in with the cool kids, showing off their new SmartGlass initiative. Mobile devices will be able to do some tasks on the smaller screen then have the ability to push them out on the big screen. Madden, for example, will allow you to make plays on the smaller screen, hidden from your opponent. I guess all three console makers have some sort of mobile remote play now.

(Mostly Timed) Exclusive DLC for Everyone!
On the Microsoft side, Tomb Raider (maybe timed), Resident Evil 6 (timed), Skyrim (timed), Call of Duty: Black Ops II (timed), South Park: The Stick of Truth (unknown). Most of this is timed exclusivity.
On the Sony side, Assassin’s Creed III and Far Cry 3.
