Nothing really groundbreaking this week, besides Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Well, I guess there is something groundbreaking then.
Square Announces Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (Because You Asked For it)
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, yet another title in Square’s FFXIII franchise (very meta, Square), was debuted this week at its 25th anniversary event. It is said to end Lightning’s story, along with having customizable gear and Navus Partus as a setting. Replayability is a focus because of the constantly running clock. It runs over thirteen days and each day is two real hours, so you must use your time wisely. This title is expected to hit the PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2013.
Writing that without any snarky response or complaints was hard to do. So, that’s what this next part is for. Seriously, who on this planet was asking for this? Some people may like Final Fantasy XIII, and more power to them, but I highly doubt many people were demanding yet another sequel in a mini-franchise that wasn’t unanimously loved in the first place. Square has some intelligent endeavors here in the other parts of the world (Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution), but their Japanese branch couldn’t be more far off the mark. I won’t get into it (because neither of us have the time), but it is sad to see them fall from grace so hard.
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Gameplay Unveiled
The Internet had not yet been lit ablaze during last week’s recap, but we have much more now. The above gameplay demo showcases Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes running in real time on a PC. It isn’t a PC exclusive though, as it is also hitting both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 hopefully sometime next year.
Impressive barely begins to describe what was actually shown. Just from a pure visual perspective, this is an all-around stunning title. Lighting, reflections, and animation were all so mesmerizing in their production, showing KojiPro’s raw skill in making games. Mystery enveloped basically everything shown, as few people were given names and actions weren’t given context. Dripping information out on this title is ingenious because I just can’t stop speculating about it, which is a factor of pure, golden excitement. The open world, return to Big Boss, mysterious story, and incredible visuals all funnel into a title that is near the top of my list. It should be on yours as well.
The Last of Us Demo Still Amazes
Blacklisting pre-release media for a game ensures that I have it very high atop my list of games to look out for. The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s next title, is at the pointy tip of that tantalizing pyramid. Positive descriptors were tossed out about the demo above (which is a variation of the E3 demo), so give it a look. Unless you are like me, painfully denying content on such an interesting game.
Ratchet: Deadlocked HD Confirmed for PSN Later this Year
The recently released Ratchet & Clank HD Collection was missing one Insomniac PS2 title: Ratchet: Deadlocked. It’s a bit unrealistic to expect four titles on one disc, but Sony decided to go halfway and give us Deadlocked digitally on PSN, all in high definition, Trophy support, and online modes restored. I’m curious to see how this game holds up, given the advancements made in the series and how different this game was from the rest. For nostalgia’s sake, I’ll likely be picking this up.
Cancelled Crash Team Racing 2010 Screens Appear
Crash Team Racing for the PS1 is probably my most played game of all time, so anything, including the crappy PS2 versions, concerning this franchise has my attention. Some user on YouTube came across screen shots of this allegedly canned title and compiled them in the video above. It would be foolish to assume that it would be as good as its original incarnation, but this is an interesting find nonetheless.
Insomniac’s Overstrike is All but Confirmed to be Renamed to Fuse
Insomniac has been quite coy about Overstrike. Only showing a trailer at E3 a few years back, the studio has been silent ever since. However, this silence is about to lift and this new name might just be start of it. It hasn’t been 100% confirmed yet, but judging by the trailer above and Insomniac’s attitude towards the subject, it’s pretty safe to assume that Fuse is the new name for this title. You can say things without saying things, right?
Robbers Selling Stolen Resident Evil 6 Copies Early
If you are hotly anticipating Resident Evil 6 and can’t wait to play it, Poland has you covered. Well, more like the thieves of Poland have you covered. Copies of the PS3 version of Resident Evil 6 are currently being sold, copies Capcom says have been stolen. Maybe one positive thing can come from this. Early adopters, please tell us if this game is utter shit. I’m desperately awaiting an answer, because Capcom looks like they are trying to dress up a turd with makeup. Or it could a Snicker’s bar.
Vita Remote Play Patched into God of War HD Collection and Team Ico Collection
As the headline outright states, the God of War HD Collection and Team Ico Collection have been been patched for remote play on the Vita, meaning you can play these titles from your PS3 on your Vita. Remote play isn’t a new thing, but this is a big step. I tested it and it worked shockingly well as long as I was in about fifteen feet of my PS3, which, to be honest, defeats the purpose a bit. I can’t try the Wi-Fi version because of my current set up, but if that actually works well, this could be a great, if superfluous, selling point for the Playstation brand of products.
Killzone Collection Inbound; Killzone 1 HD Included
Continuing the trend of packing as much of one franchise in a single box, Sony has given similar treatment to the Killzone franchise. Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 (along with a few map packs) will be sold together in the Killzone Collection, along with an HD and Trophy enabled version of the original Killzone with updated controls. Fans looking for just Killzone HD will be happy to see that Sony has confirmed that it will available as a standalone download on PSN. This Helghast-heavy box will be released on October 23rd for the low price of $39.99.
